Nutrition facts:

1 tablespoon of honey (21 grams) contains 64 calories and 17 grams of sugar, including fructose, glucose, maltose and sucrose.

It contains virtually no fiber, fat or protein.

It also contains trace amounts — under 1% of the RDI — of several different vitamins and minerals, but you would have to eat many pounds to fulfill your daily requirements.

Why do we love them?

  • Honey contains an abundance of antioxidants, including phenolic
    compounds like flavonoids.

  • Studies show that honey improves heart disease risk factors in people with diabetes. However, it also raises blood sugar levels — so if you have diabetes it isn’t necessarily healthy.

  • Eating honey could potentially lead to slight reductions in blood pressure.

  • Honey seems to have a positive effect on cholesterol levels. It leads to slight reductions in total and “bad” LDL cholesterol while raising “good” HDL cholesterol.

  • Studies show that honey may lower triglyceride levels, especially if it is used as a sugar substitute. Elevated triglycerides are a risk factor for heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

  • The antioxidants in honey have been linked to beneficial effects on heart health, including increased blood flow to your heart and a reduced risk of blood clot formation.

  • When applied to the skin, honey can help to treat burns, wounds and many other skin conditions. It is particularly effective for diabetic foot ulcers.

  • For children over one year of age, honey can act as a natural and safe cough suppressant.

Honey BBQ Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp butter

  • 4 oz yellow onion, chopped

  • 1 oz garlic, minced

  • 2 chipotle peppers

  • 4 oz coffee

  • 4 oz ketchup

  • 2 oz balsamic vinegar

  • 2 oz local honey

Directions

  • Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl in a sauce pot and simmer until it is nearly dry.

  • Remove from heat and allow to cool to room temperature and blend smooth.
